Genre : Folk Tale with a twist
Suitable for : lower to middle primary
Aesop’s Fable of the Tortoise and the Hare underlines ‘more haste, less speed’, and ‘pride comes before a fall’. Mark Puddy’s version, commissioned by the Australian Girls Choir, includes these elements with a twenty first century twist; rather than having the Hare take a nap in the middle of the race because he’s so far ahead, the Hare is so besotted with himself that he stops to take ‘selfies’, ‘tweets’ Twitter messages, posts on Facebook, watches YouTube and generally wastes time because he’s distracted;-by his love of himself! The Hare is the ultimate narcissicist. This leads to him losing the race with the Tortoise. The final celebration underlines the Tortoise’s bravery; ‘she may be slow, but good things come to those who wait’.
